Living Up to Expectations AND Setting the Standard

In today's world, being a ‘pro’ isn't just about showing up to work and getting things done. It's about being the person everyone expects you to be, performing at your best, and setting a high standard for others to follow.

I drew inspiration from DJ Shipley’s talk, and I wanted to dive into the mindset. It is a perfect metaphor for how we want to function as high level performers on the field, in our businesses, and in life.

Imagine if you’re chosen to represent your line of work in middle of an international job fair. You’re standing there in front of everyone, and what would you want them to see?

Do you want them to see a bum or an absolute pro?

The Look of a Pro

This person knows how to look the part. They’re jacked. They can physically perform at an extremely high level at any moment’s notice, and they do it better than everyone.

The Vibe of a Pro

A pro’s confidence is unmistakable. They move with purpose and ease, and they move the needle with every single move they make. They don’t waste time. They’re driven to make a difference on and off the field. This person is going to be unflappable. They will stay cool under pressure. They’ve been there before.

The Skills of a Pro

The perfect ‘pro’ will out-train, out-work, and out-perform anyone. This is because they’re passionate and committed to mastering their craft. In sports, high performing athletes seek out other high performing athletes where they can work towards out-performing others.

You shouldn’t be swimming with goldfishes. You should be swimming with sharks.

Setting the Standard

Being the person everyone expects means always aiming high. This pro isn't just doing their job; they're pushing the limits of what's possible. They're always learning and improving, setting an example for others. Their work ethic is top-notch, and they have integrity that others admire. They inspire their peers to aim higher and do better.

Beyond the Job Fair

When they’re out and about, the pro will continue to live up (and exceed) to those high standards. They're mentors, leaders, and innovators, always looking to share their knowledge and help others grow. Their impact goes beyond their job, influencing their entire industry and inspiring the next generation.

You can be a pro.

To "be a pro" means embracing excellence and going beyond just doing your job. It's about being someone others look up to, performing at your best, and constantly raising the bar. Whether on the field or in your daily life, being a professional means being the best version of yourself and inspiring others to do the same.
